Olivier Coenen, PHD Distinguished AI Scientist
Olivier Coenen, PhD – Foundational Research Scientist: 25 years in industry + 3 PostDoc + PhD; most recently Principal/Senior Research Scientist at BrainChip (Apr 2021–Sep 2025)
Olivier J.-M. D. Coenen is a foundational research scientist in deep learning and neuromorphic engineering, focused on spatiotemporal neural networks and neural state-space models (SSMs) for efficient, streaming inference from datacenter to edge. He earned his PhD in Physics/Biophysics at the University of California, San Diego and The Salk Institute under Prof. Terrence J. Sejnowski, where he was an early adopter at UCSD of artificial neural networks (parallel distributed processing) before they became known as modern deep learning. Olivier founded and led the Neuroscience Group at Sony Computer Science Laboratory – Paris (2001–2008), creating and coordinating two top-ranked EU consortia—SPIKEFORCE (EUR 2.4M) and SENSOPAC (EUR 6.5M)—and leading research in real-time spiking neural networks, cerebellar motor control for robotics, and active multimodal perception. He later developed spiking motor-control models and a DARPA “artificial nervous system for UAVs” at Brain Corporation (2010–2013), contributing to Series B financing with Qualcomm Ventures and producing numerous patents. He co-founded Intentiva (2013–2014) and then founded Qelzal Corporation / Kelzal (2014–2020), building low-latency event-based perception and processing stacks (recognition, tracking, stereo vision, optic flow, IMU-driven image stabilization, frequency estimation, registration, denoising, resolution enhancement, and image reconstruction) deployed on drones, vehicles, retail, and security systems, supported by NSF and DARPA funding. Most recently, at BrainChip (April 2021–September 2025), he served as Principal/Senior Research Scientist, inventing PLEIADES and SCORPIUS and co-inventing TENNs used in Akida 2.0+ and Akida GenAI silicon, delivering state-of-the-art results across event-based and continuous-signal benchmarks (including RadioML 2018 automatic modulation classification) and leading a U.S. Air Force research program ($1.8M). Across academia and industry, he has led more than $15M in funded programs and produced 50+ publications and 13+ patents.
